Paul Keatley

Home Garden

Paul and his partner have been developing their garden since 1999. It is a sea side garden, gently slopping down to the beach. It is south facing and is open to the winds especially from the south and the west. It has acid, fertile and very well drained soil. A burn runs diagonally through the garden and it has dry stone walls on two sides.

When they started the garden it had been totally neglected for over ten years. They cut their first vegetable bed, using the lifted turf to make a turf wall for shelter. They planted their first vegetables, some apple trees, current bushes and herbs.

In the years that followed they built fences, moved shrubs, made shelter belts, replanted the herbaceous border, cut new vegetable beds, planted more fruit (apples, pears, plums, damsons, currents, gooseberries, raspberries and strawberries) and developed an extensive herb garden.

As the years went by hard landscaping, a large greenhouse and raised vegetable beds were added. Despite the sometimes harsh weather conditions the garden now provides them with an abundance of summer and winter vegetables, salad, herbs, fruit and flowers. It is full of birds, bees, insects and laughter.
